In 2012, I traveled to Lima, Peru. It was a memorable because the Lions in Sight team saw 4,200 patients with just eight doctors and 12 technicians.
In addition to providing eye care for the locals in the area, some of my trip highlights included eating fried guinea pig, absorbing the culture of the Peruvian people, seeing old friends who live there, and taking in the beautiful country landscape.
Our team worked very hard, but afterward I was able to celebrate by hiking up Machu, Picchu – one of the Seven Wonders of The World!
In 2016, I returned to Peru for more clinical work, but this time I was accompanied by my wife Cheryl. It was a great experience to come back to a country of people I had grown to love and to also hike Machu Picchu again, but with Cheryl this time.
I saw several patients with prosthetic eyes and cataracts. One woman’s eye had been enucleated (had the eyeball completely removed) with no prosthetic inserted. The yellow/white mucous in the photo of her is a bacterial infection, which was treated with antibiotic drops. One of my favorite experiences was being able to provide eye care to a deaf couple. I was able to give them prescription glasses and sunglasses. Our translators from a local university in Lima were also a great help to the whole team.
